Brookside mothers' Association

We exist to connect moms of young children and facilitate meaningful bonds that last throughout all seasons of motherhood.

WHO WE ARE. WHAT WE VALUE. HOW WE SUPPORT.

We serve 265 moms and 403 children - newborn to school age - living across 25 zip codes in MO & KS. We value communities of friendship and kindness, and connect through playgroups, events and online support groups.

Wherever you are in motherhood, we would love for you to be a part of our community (and, no, you don't have to live in Brookside; many of us don't)!

Getting connected

The annual investment is $50; having friends when you need them is invaluable.

Join

Step 1

Enter your email address in the field below.

Step 2

Check your email! You'll find a link to complete your application and pay your annual dues. The dues, while a small investment, enable BMA to connect families through events, playgroups, and educational workshops. The cost thereafter is minimal.

Step 3

Open your Welcome Email, where you'll find tips and links to help you plug in.

Connect

Step 1

Join our private FB pages - Chat.Share.Support and BST (Buy.Sell.Trade)

Step 2

Join a playgroup! The welcome email includes a link to a Playgroup Roster. Most playgroups are organized by age and meet weekly.

Step 3

Check the calendar and the monthly newsletters for upcoming events and get to know some familiar faces. We all feel awkward and tired at times so be brave moms - we're in this together!

Connect others

Step 1

When you see a new name or face, welcome her :) Remember how it feels to be the new gal, and do unto her as you would like others to do unto you.

Step 2

Invite friends and neighbors to join! We exist to serve all moms and the more we serve, the better our community gets.

Step 3

Get involved. The BMA Board is a volunteer, self-perpetuating board. Applications for new board members are collected each fall.  Click here to learn more about this year's board.

BMA BEGINNINGS

by Pip Cross

"...surround yourself with wonderful, supportive women, who whatever choices they make, support whatever choice you make - 100%.  BMA evolved from the grassroots, grew organically, and continues forty years later because of remarkable women like each and every one of you.”

Susan Still, BMA Founding Member

Susan Still was one of the first members recruited to join the Mother’s Group that would go on to become Brookside Mothers’ Association. Susan tells the story that “One day a woman came to the door, she said someone had told her that I had children and that she and a friend were putting together a group that would be a resource for mothers who stayed home with their children.  That was (almost) 40 years ago”.

That woman was Kindra Jackal, who, together with her friend, had the idea to support themselves and others through the season of mothering young children by organizing a Mother’s Group.  The initial idea was for arranging group activities with the kids, but soon spun out into a babysitting co-op, a book club, and a dinner club.  Friendships formed in those early years continued even as their kids grew up and to this day Susan, Kindra and former BMA Newsletter writer, Becky Summer still live in Brookside and are still friends!

Susan’s circumstances back in 1978, and desire to be part of a Mother’s Group, will sound familiar to many of us.  She and her husband had moved into a new house in an established neighborhood where many of her immediate neighbors’ children were already grown. continue reading
